Five Simple Habits to End Your Day

back

How you end your day has as much impact on you as how you start your day. It’s an opportunity for celebration and reflection, for re-connecting with your priorities and counting your blessings.

Consider your current bedtime habits. Do they honor your accomplishments of the day? Do they leave you feeling grounded and happy? Do they help to re-focus you on your priorities in life If not, you can begin to create some new habits. Start by adding or substituting one new habit. Then when you have settled into that one, you can add another.

1. Celebrate your day.

Take a few minutes to reflect on what worked today. It’s easy to focus on what didn’t go well or what tasks you didn’t get done. Instead take time to acknowledge and celebrate all the things that you did accomplish. What are you proud of? Where did you make choices that align with your goals and values?

2. Release your day.

At the end of the day one thing is certain – you can’t get it back. So dragging with you the remains of the day into your sleep won’t change what happened or likely impact positively on tomorrow. Take notice of what didn’t work today and then let it go. Be compassionate with yourself. We all make choices that don’t necessarily serve us well. The key is to let them go and then choose differently next time.

3. Consider your focus for tomorrow.

Once you’ve celebrated what worked and released what didn’t work, consider your focus for tomorrow. Given what didn’t work today, what do you want to do differently tomorrow? What one thing will be most important tomorrow to bring you closer to your goals and keep you in alignment with your values? What will be the most helpful attitude? When tomorrow is over and you are reflecting on your day, what do you want to be able to celebrate?

4. Keep a gratitude journal.

Focusing on the blessings in your life is a proven technique for increasing your sense of well-being and optimism. Take a few minutes just before going to sleep to write down the 3 to 5 things that you are grateful for that day. Gratitude is something that extends to all aspects and experiences in our lives, so you don’t have to feel limited by the types of things you write down. Being grateful for fleece socks on a cold day or a cold glass of ice tea on a hot day are just as meaningful as gratitude for your health. The key to keeping a gratitude journal is to make it simple and do it consistently day in and day out.

5. Go to bed in enough time.

It’s estimated that one in two people is sleep deprived. Instead of thinking that sleep is a luxury, consider that this is the time when your body restores, repairs and renews itself. Adequate sleep boosts your immune system and your concentration skills. While everyone is different, most adults require 8 to 9 hours of sleep each night. If you are not getting enough rest, begin by going to bed fifteen minutes earlier. Chances are whatever you have been doing in that fifteen minutes is not nearly as important as creating a new sleep habit.
