What is a Podcast?
A podcast is like a radio show “on demand”. You download it on to your phone, or you stream it on a website like a youtube video.
Podcasting has seen a real boom in the last 5 years. There are thousands of podcasts out there on every possible topic.
My podcast is called The Being and the Doing. I talk about everything from how to stop worrying, decluttering your life and other topics in the “wellness” genre.
How do I find a Podcast?
You can find podcasts in three locations:
1. The Podcast Host’s Webpage – Podcasters always have a page on their website talking about their podcast, letting you see all the episodes, and offering you articles, programs and other resources they mention in the show.
2. Music Sites for Downloading/Streaming – Podcasts are lumped into the same bucket as music. You can find podcasts on Apple Music, Spotify, Soundcloud etc.
3. The “Podcast” App on your Phone – If you have an iPhone you have a built in app already. If you have an Android device you may need to download the app and then use it. See instructions for both in the sections below.
How to Listen to a Podcast on a Desktop Computer
Listening to a podcast on your phone or desktop computer is actually pretty simple. You really just need to answer a simple question … where do you want to listen to it?
The simplest way is right on your desktop computer on the podcast webpage mentioned above.
You are “streaming” it, which is like watching a youtube video. You just press play.
** It uses data so be sure to be on wifi somewhere.
Here is an example of one of my podcasts embedded for you to listen to on your computer (or cell phone if you’re using one to view this page!).
The other way to listen is to use a podcast app on your phone.
How to Listen to a Podcast on an iPhone
If you have an iPhone you can use the Apple podcasts app to listen to podcasts.
The Podcasts app should already be downloaded on your phone so search your apps for ‘Podcasts’. If it’s not, go to the app store and download it. (Note: there are dozens of other podcasts apps on the app store too. We are just profiling the main one)
Open the Podcast app and go to the search page (click on the magnifying glass button in the navigation at the bottom).
Choose the podcast you want from the search results and tap on it. This should take you to the podcast’s homepage.
Once you’re on the podcast homepage you’ll see a list of recent episodes. Tap on one to play it.
If you like what you hear, a subscribe button at the top of the page lets you subscribe for free. This means the app will automatically download the latest episodes to your library.
How to Listen to a Podcast on an Android Device
If you have an Android phone you can use the Google podcasts app.
Search “Google podcasts” in the play store app or click this link on your phone to open it in the store.
Install the app.
Once you open the app, use the search box (look out for the magnifying glass icon) and type in the name of the podcast you want to find eg: The Being and the Doing.
Choose the podcast you want from the search results and tap on it again.
Once on the podcast homepage you should see a list of most recent episodes. Tap on one to play it.
If you like it, tap the subscribe button at the top of the page. When you subscribe to a podcast, it’ll appear at the top of the Google podcasts app, and a new section in the app will let you know about new episodes from podcasts you’ve subscribed to.
You should also be able to listen to podcasts from the Google search app, just search for the name of the podcast.
Can You Listen to a Podcast Without Wifi?
You can listen off of wifi only if you download it first.
When you use a podcast app there is a download symbol next to each episode. Click it and it will download to your phone.
It’s an important tip to set the “data” settings for your podcast app (go to settings and then find the data section) to ONLY allow the app to run on wifi. Turn off the data for that app.
This forces the podcast to either be downloaded or run on your wifi.
You can google how to do that for your particular phone model if you need more help. It’s really easy and saves you from eating up your monthly data allowance.
Have fun listening!
