Most people have some work related stress. It’s a pretty common thing. It’s also common to drag that stress home with you at the end of the day. It can be hard to leave work at work. Maybe you frequently ask yourself, “How do I reduce my stress?” Here’s a more important question: When was your last vacation? According to a new TD Bank survey, 57% of Canadians do not take all of their vacation days. That’s even though 93% of the people surveyed thought vacations were really important. Think back to when you started your job. Chances are the number of vacation days you would be entitled to were a part of the conversation. They actually have a dollar value that’s worth something.
So why the heck don’t people take a vacation?
It probably has something to do with too much work, or too much hassle, or don’t know what to do or some other equally as silly answer. If your boss came to you today and said, “Hey we are cutting your vacation days, ” you would probably pitch a little fit.
Trust me – you need a vacation.
A vacation gives both your brain and your body a rest. That reduces stress. You come back to your job re-energized. You come home from work a happier person. Not taking a vacation increases the chance you will burn out. Vacationless people are more bored, more cranky, less creative and often more sick than people who take time off. If you are thinking, “I would like a vacation but I just can’t get away from work,” then remind yourself that no one is indispensable. If a major crisis happened at home, you would leave work without even thinking about it. Thankfully a vacation does not need a crisis. And you can actually plan ahead. You don’t have to take all your vacation days at once if you don’t want to. A four day weekend works wonders for your stress level too. There are lots of options for low-cost retreats that will help you recharge. So if you are one of those people who thinks vacations are important but don’t take any, get our your calendar and block off some days.
