If you could predict your future, would you?
Would you want to know if you have achieved all your goals?
Even if you are a giant skeptic, there’s something a little intriguing about calling 1-800-psychicnetwork or imagining stepping behind the curtain into Madame someone-or-other’s parlour.
That’s because there’s a certain appeal to knowing what will happen in the future.
Part of us wants to have a glimpse into how our lives will unfold. Maybe not every detail, but a sense of whether things will turn out the way we want them to happen.
I’m guessing if you did go to a psychic or have your palm read, you would probably ask general questions about the future direction of your life:
Will my relationships be satisfying?
Is my career a success?
Will I be financially okay?
Will I be healthy?
Those questions really reflect major life goals that we all probably have.
Maybe it would be great if the tarot cards or the tea leaves could predict where we are headed.
Maybe it’s just a bunch of new age woo woo.
The truth is whether you believe in someone else’s ability to look into your future is not really the point.
There’s one person for sure who can tell you how life might unfold.
Yup you are the one.
The basic law of cause and effect
The problem is that most people are lousy at predicting their own futures.
That’s because they don’t take advantage of the crystal ball they have at their disposal.
All you have to do is take a close look at the choices you are making today, and you will have a pretty good idea of what lies ahead.
But surprisingly most people have a huge disconnect between their current actions and their future life goals.
You can call it denial or simply ignoring the basic laws of cause and effect.
It’s the choices you make today, not the ones you made yesterday, or the ones you might make tomorrow, which determine what the future looks like. It’s the choices you make today, not the ones you made yesterday, or the ones you might make tomorrow, which determine what the future looks like. Unless you have a time machine, today is the only day you have some control over.
Does past behaviour predict the future?
Some people say that past behavior predicts future performance.
There’s some truth that the past influences the future. Our history helps to define who we are. It shapes our values and preferences.
Sometimes it holds us hostage only because we keep doing the same things over and over again.
But the past sure doesn’t have to limit us. That only happens when you allow yourself to entertain thoughts like, “I’ve never been able to do this before.” Or “It’s always been hard in the past.”
Switch those ideas up with this question:
“What do I need to do today to be successful?”
Do that and you release yourself from the shackles of past behavior.
If you want to give any power to the past, at least make it helpful. Ask yourself:
“What can I learn from my choices in the past that can move me forward today?”
When you ask a powerful question like that, then all of a sudden the past becomes an ally rather than an enemy.
Of course, looking ahead and setting goals is an important part of the process too.
Make daily choices to achieve life goals
Here’s the thing….
In the end, if you don’t choose wisely today, any plans for the future simply remain there – in the future.
So yes you can predict your future.
Put less energy into yesterday and tomorrow.
Just for today make choices that move you toward satisfying relationships, financial security and healthy living and you will foresee a future full of those things.
Choose less wisely and I guarantee that’s not what you will find.
Take care of today and the tomorrows take care of themselves.
Your own crystal ball is in the palm of your hand.
